Smallest Programmable Indus Phone Design (Part 2)

Indusphone

Building an ultra-compact phone is not just a hardware challenge, it requires seamless integration of the user interface with real phone functionalities. While the initial IndusPhone design established the UI and validated GSM communication, the lack of integrated calling logic, app handling, and background task management limited its usability as a complete phone system.

Part 2 of the IndusPhone project focuses on software and UI integration, bringing core phone functions—calling, contacts, and basic apps—into a single, cohesive system on the IndusBoard Coin. This stage transforms the prototype from a UI demo into a functioning miniature phone.

Check Part 1 and Part 3.

Key Features
  • Integrated calling system with dial, attend, and hang-up functions
  • Idle screen UI that continuously monitors incoming calls, battery level, and network status
  • Touch-driven call controls using a compact TFT display
  • App framework with a dedicated App home screen
  • Built-in applications including contacts and calculator
  • Threaded background monitoring for incoming calls while apps are running
  • Direct GSM control using AT commands for call handling and contacts retrieval
  • SMD microphone and speaker integration for voice input and audio output
Applications
  • DIY and educational mobile phone development
  • Embedded UI and touchscreen integration projects
  • GSM-based communication device prototyping
  • Learning platform for multitasking and UI-driven embedded systems
  • Foundation for future upgrades such as 4G LTE-enabled compact phones

This second phase of the IndusPhone project bridges the gap between interface design and real-world functionality. By tightly coupling the UI with GSM-based calling and basic applications, the IndusPhone moves closer to being a fully usable miniature phone—laying the groundwork for upcoming enhancements like LTE support and expanded app capabilities in future editions.
