Wearable Location Tracking Using Wi-FI SSID Signal and IndusBoard

Location tracking plays a pivotal role in numerous applications, ranging from navigation aids to efficient asset management systems. However, traditional GPS-based solutions encounter significant limitations, particularly in indoor environments or urban settings with dense signal interference.

To address these challenges, we propose an innovative approach to location tracking by harnessing Wi-Fi SSID signals, magnetic compass data, and the versatile capabilities of the Indusboard – a compact IoT device equipped with Wi-Fi functionality and a magnetic compass sensor. This novel combination allows for the realization of real-time location tracking, even in environments where traditional GPS signals struggle to penetrate.

The SSID-based location tracking system offers versatility and applicability across a spectrum of scenarios, including:

  1. Indoor Navigation: Facilitating seamless navigation within buildings where GPS signals are unreliable or inaccessible. By leveraging Wi-Fi SSID signals, users can pinpoint their location with precision, enhancing overall navigation accuracy.
  2. Asset Tracking: Streamlining asset management processes within warehouses or manufacturing facilities becomes effortless with SSID-based tracking. The system provides real-time updates on asset locations, enabling efficient inventory management and resource allocation.
  3. Personnel Monitoring: Tracking and monitoring personnel movement in large venues or event spaces is made possible through SSID-based location tracking. By leveraging Wi-Fi signals, organizations can ensure the safety and security of their personnel while optimizing operational efficiency.
  4. Location-Based Marketing: Leveraging SSID-based location tracking opens up new avenues for targeted advertising and marketing campaigns. By analyzing Wi-Fi SSID data, businesses can tailor their marketing efforts based on the specific locations and demographics of their target audience.

In this project, the Indusboard, powered by the ESP32, serves as the cornerstone of the system architecture. With its Wi-Fi scanning capabilities, the Indusboard identifies nearby networks and extracts location data based on SSID signals. Additionally, the onboard magnetic compass sensor provides directional information, enhancing the accuracy of location tracking. The GC9A01 Round display complements the system by presenting location data and connection status in a user-friendly format, ensuring seamless interaction for the end user.

Overall, the integration of SSID-based location tracking with the Indusboard offers a versatile and robust solution for diverse applications, promising enhanced efficiency and accuracy in location-based services.
